Summary
Mazdutide is a once-weekly dual agonist of the GLP-1 and glucagon receptors, modelled on the gut hormone oxyntomodulin. China’s regulator approved it for chronic weight management in June 2025 after the GLORY-1 phase 3 trial in Chinese adults.
Structure
Oxyntomodulin-like dual agonist developed by Eli Lilly and licensed to Innovent Biologics for China.
How it works
Like survodutide, mazdutide pairs GLP-1 appetite suppression with glucagon receptor activity, which is intended to increase energy expenditure and hepatic fat oxidation.
Research use cases
Areas where Mazdutide has been studied. Inclusion here does not mean it works for that purpose.
- Chronic weight management (approved in China)
- Type 2 diabetes (studied)
- Liver fat reduction (studied)
What the research found
GLORY-1 phase 3
In Chinese adults with overweight or obesity, mazdutide at 4 mg and 6 mg produced significantly greater weight loss than placebo at 48 weeks, with reductions in liver fat, waist circumference and blood pressure.1
Regulatory approval
China’s National Medical Products Administration approved mazdutide for chronic weight management in June 2025, making it the first approved dual glucagon and GLP-1 receptor agonist.2
Safety and open questions
Gastrointestinal effects are most common. Heart-rate increases have been reported, as with other glucagon-containing agonists. Data in non-Chinese populations are limited.
Regulatory status
Approved in China (NMPA, June 2025) for chronic weight management. Not approved in the US or EU.
Status was accurate when this page was last reviewed on October 26, 2026. Regulations change; check with the relevant authority before relying on it.
Mazdutide: common questions
Is mazdutide available in the US?
